Subject: Limburgish

After the "Nederlandse Taalunie" advised negatively to the Belgian
government concerning the recognition of Limburgish as a regional language,
the Provincial Government of Belgian Limburg has announced new initiatives
(Het Belang van Limburg, Feb. 14, 2000):

- BF 1.300.000 is reserved for printing 1500 bier mats with expressions in
Limburgish for each of the 150 bars with a name in Limburgish.
- The Provincial Government will subsidize performances by groups singing in
Limburgish in a bars from a selected list.
- The instruction package for teachers in middle schools in Limburg (16
modules) will be reprinted. It has been used in 130 schools.
