A'v been lairnin masel the words ti "The Bonny Lass o Fyvie" but A
dinna ken
the Fyvie airt an A'm no richt shuir o the soondin o some o the place
names.
A wonder if onybody could explain hou thae place names is sayed?

First, here the sang:

The war a troop o Irish dragoons
Cam mairchin doun throu Fyvie, O!
An their captain's faan in love wi a very bonny lass
An her name it wis caad Pretty Peggy, O!

Nou the'r mony a bonny lass in the Howe o Auchterless
The'r mony a bonny lass in the Garioch, O!
The'r mony a bonny Jean in the toun o Aiberdeen
But the flouer o them aa is in Fyvie, O!

It's come doun the stair, Pretty Peggy, ma dear
An come doun the stair, Pretty Peggy, O!

For it's A'll gie ye ribands til yer bonny gowden hair

An A'll gie ye petticoats wi floonces ti the knee

An the band played the Lawlans o Fyvie, O!

Lang afore we wun inti Auldmeldrum toun
It's oor captain we haed ti cairy, O!
An lang afore we wun inti bonny Aiberdeen
It's oor captain we haed ti bury, O!

Green growes the birks on bonny Ythanside
An law lies the Lawlans o Fyvie, O!
The captain's name wis Ned, an he dee'd for a maid
He dee'd for the bonny lass o Fyvie, O!

Soondins A'm no shuir aboot is:

Fyvie: A think we soond this wi the short diphthong ['f at ivI] in ma
airt, but
the SVLR wad suggest the lang diphthong ['fa:ivI], sae what ane is't?
It
micht be that the soondin in ma airt is a fauss analogy wi "Fife".

Garioch: A'v seen a sang in Herd's (1775) collection that rhymes
"Garioch"
wi "thouch", but A believe the modern soondin is ['gi:rI] ("geary")?

Ythanside: hou is "Ythan" soondit?

Gight: the internal rhyme suggests [gi?] ("giet") - wad that be
richt?

That's aa!

guinea: a coin worth 21/- (21 shillings = £1.05)
