From: Roger Thijs [Roger.Thijs at village.uunet.be]
Subject: Religion and expression
Many of us belgians have been "glued" to their TV sets last three evenings
for the final days of the Queen Elisabeth concours in Brussels (this year
for vocal expression, candidates had to perform in three disciplines:
opera, oratorium and lied; Elisabeth was a princess of the Bavarian house
of Wittelsbach and played violin by herself. She was married to king Albert
of Belgium and acted as nurse during the first world war)
The final was won by the (French) Canadian Marie-Nicole Lemieux.
Since only the Belgian French TV (La Deux) was sending live the first two
evenings, one could listen a second time in the late night on the Belgian
Dutch TV (Canvas) and compare the comments.
While the comments on the Flemish TV "Canvas" were very much in favor of
Margriet van Reisen, from the Netherlands - they all got teirs in their
eyes listening to Margriet's interpretation of Mahler-, on the walloon TV
"La Deux" Margriet was broken down for her "cool __protestant__"
expression. (In both cases the comments came from a core of three
commentators, completed by comments by others popping in in the TV
commentator's balconies; it must be said that several of the Dutch
commentators for the Flemish TV "Canvas" were from the Netherlands: even
one of them Mia Besselinck is teacher, in Maastricht, of the Syrian Lubana
Al Quntaret, who ended fifth)
Is there a link between religion and vocal expression?
Regards,
Roger
