[The following is in Low Saxon (Low German) and English.]

Ick glööv', in de meersten neddersassischen/nedderdüütschen Mundaarden vun
Noorddüütschland bruukt 'n vundagigendaags dat Tiedwoord "flechten" or
"flechen" (in de mennonietschen Mundaarden _flachte_ or _flajchte_), to'n
Biespeel "Körv' flechten", un ick meen, dat is ook richtig "Haar flechten" or
"Zöpp/Töpp flechten" to seggen.  Nu gifft 't ook dat Tiedwoord "katerdrellen"
in'n Sinn vun "flechten".  In't Wöörbook vun Günter un Johanna stait dat
Biespeel "sien Pietsch weer katerdrellt" _seine Peitsche war mit vier Strängen
geflochten_.  Weett wen mang Ju, of "katerdrellen" nu in elk Fall "mit veer
Sträng flechten" bedüüdt?  Kann 'n dat ok anners bruken?  Weett Jie, waar dat
Woord vun afkümmt un woans dat Orginaalwoord schreven wardt?  Mie dücht, dat
kümmt uut't Franssöössche, vunwegen "kater..." < _quatre_ 'veer'.

Dear Lowlanders,
I believe in most Low Saxon/Low German dialects of Northern Germany you use
the verb _flechten_ or _flechen_ (Mennonite Low Saxon _flachte_ or _flajchte_)
to convey 'to weave (baskets)' and 'to braid'; e.g., _Körv' flechten_ 'to
weave baskets', and I assume it is also correct to say _Haar flechten_ 'to
braid hair' or _Zöpp/Töpp flechten_ 'to make braids'.  However, there is also
the verb _katerdrellen_ in the sense of 'to braid'.  In Günter and Johanna
Harte's dictionary there is the example _sien Pietsch weer katerdrellt_,
translated into German as _seine Peitsche war mit vier Strängen geflochten_,
thus 'his whip was braided with four strands (or strips of leather)'.  Does
anyone know if _katerdrellen_ always means 'to braid with four strands'?  Is
it possible to use it another way?  Do you know the origin of the word and how
it is written in the donor language?  My guess is that it comes from French,
because of _kater..." < _quatre_ 'four'.
