Hm... We'd have to know how the Vikings adressed their
cats.. Today, "kis" or "kissekat" is an affective
expression for a cat in Denmark, but was it the same
back then, about a thousand years ago?
Speaking of animal sounds, I read an article on a book
dealing with these "onomatopoetikon". I don't recall
the name of the author, but it is a study of animal
sounds in several countries in Europe and Asia.... As
far as I remember, they list sounds of dogs, hens,
sheep, snakes, etc. etc....
Another "guide" to animal sounds in different
languages are the Asterix cartoons which are
translated into a lot of languages. In Germany, they
even have dialect and latin translations of Asterix.
Apparently, René Goschinny, the scriptwriter, had a
weakness for "speaking" animals, because the series
are practically crawling with them. Eg. a
"dog-conversation" between the tiny Idefix and a Great
Dane, and the concearned boars trying to escape from
the dinner table (translations into "human language"
in the margin only!)
Greetings, Lone Olesen
