Etymology of _Dane_ and _Denmark_

I simply could not resist the subject heading (Lowlands in Denmark).

_Dane_ actually means lowlander, and _Denemearc_ means the boundery territory
of the lowlanders. Denmark referred originally to the area outside Haithabu
where the danes expanded south-wards exploiting the power-vacuum after the
Anglian collapse until they met the Saxons who moved north-wards into the same
area. The word _Dane_ is related to greek _thenas_ which refers to flatness as
e.g. a floor or the sole of the hand or foot. Also related to MLS _denne_
