Subject: Resources
Dear Lowlanders,
As many of you already know, Southern Jutish (_Sønderjysk_), although
essentially North Germanic, is of marginal interest to this list, because this
group of language varieties represents an overlap or meeting place of North
Germanic and West Germanic, specifically of Danish- and Saxon-type varieties.
Southern Jutish has "un-Scandinavian" features such as consistent preposing of
definite articles. Of direct interest to this list is the influence of
Southern Jutish (and Danish, from which some want to see it treated
separately) on the Low Saxon (Low German) dialects of Schleswig-Holstein,
especially on those of Schleswig (Germany) and of Southern Jutland (Denmark,
in the latter of which they are now moribund or extinct).
Therefore, I would like to draw your attention to a valuable online resource
in the making:
Jysk Ordbog (Jutish Dictionary)
http://www.jyskordbog.dk/hjemmesider/
When completed in ca. 2020, it will be a dictionary of pretty much all the
original (Jutish) dialects of the Jutland Peninsula and also of some related
insular dialects:
"Jysk Ordbog dækker dialekterne i den del af landet, hvor der tales jysk.
Opdelingen af landets dialekter i jysk og ømål bygger traditionelt på to
kriterier. For det første den forskellige form af stedordet jeg: til jysk
regnes de dialekter, der har a eller æ, til ømål de dialekter, der ligesom
rigsmålet har jeg (med forskellige udtaler). For det andet udviklingen af
tryksvagt slutlydende ´e (i fx hoppe): ´e går helt tabt i jysk i modsætning
I take it this includes the dialects of Southern Jutland and Schleswig. (They
do say they include the dialects used south of the border. Southern Jutish is
also used in Germany and there tends to be treated as separate from Danish,
which is an official minority language in Germany.)
The dictionary requires Danish reading proficiency. It looks like a very
valuable and convenient resource in the making and may be of use to some of
our subscribers.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
