I removed these files, and replaced them, for a couple of days, with 4
others.

Belgium has quite certainly a lot due to opera music:
On Sept 25, 1830, warmed up by the duet of Masaniello and Pietro (at the
time sung by Lafeuillade and Cassel), the mob left the opera, destructed
the presses of the newspaper "Le National" (that was in favor of the
king of the Netherlands), burned down the house downtown Brussels of the
Dutch minister "van Maanen", and started a revolution, that would lead
to the declaration of independence of Belgium on Oct 4th 1830, after
several weeks of fighting with the Dutchmen.

The duet is part of the opera "La muette de Portici" by Daniel Auber
(libretto E. Scribe & G. Delavigne), first staged in the Salle Le
Peletier in Paris on Febr. 29, 1828. It basically deals with the case of
the dumb Fenella, left by her former lover the Duc of Arcos, but really
expresses the cry for indempendence from Spain by the Naples population.

What warmed up the Belgians was the part:

Mieux vaut mourier qiue rester misérable!
Pour un esclave est-il quelque danger?
Tombe le joug, qui nous accable
Et sous nos coups périsse l'étranger.
  (It's better to die than live in misery!
  Is there any danger for a slave?
  The yoke that chokes us must fall,
  And the foreigner perish under our blows!)

and especially:

Amour sacré de la patrie,
Rends-nous l'audace et la fierté;
A mon pays je dois la vie,
Il me devra sa liberté.
  (Sacred love of the fatherland;
  give us boldness and valour;
  I owe my live to my country,
  It will own me its freedom)

The file is saved as "64 kbps wma" copy of track 10 (of 11) of CD 1 (of
2) from the CD box Auber, La Muette de Portici, EMI 7492842 (USA CDCC
49284)
The file is 4.4 Mb and takes 9.15 min to play. The duet is just covering
the first 5.45 min, but I coundn't manage to cut off just there and
record just that part of the track. (The complete track stops in the
middle of the last word of the section: "perfide")
The recording was made in sept 1986 in Monte Carlo.
Alfredo Klaus is performing Masaniello (tenor) and Jean-Philippe Lafont
(baryton) plays Pietro.

About 15 years ago the Flemish government merged the opera's of Ghent
and Antwerp into the KVO (Koninklijke Vlaamse Opera). Programma's are
actually staged for one week in Ghent and one week in Antwerp, with
about 10 productions a year. Quite a lot of Flemish singers were sacked.
Key roles nowadays are performed by international singers from Munich,
Vienna, the Metropolitan, .... and come over just for a couple of weeks
for one single production.

So an old tradition of opera singers, continuing their performances
later in the night, in the bars around the operabuildings, with humerous
and silly texts on the opera melodies, is disappearing. Koen Crucke,
originally a barber, once sung at the Ghent opera. (He is now playing in
kid's programmes and in cooking programmes on TV)

The song on the file gives the recipee for making "Gentse Waterzooi"':
chicken cooked together with potatos and vegetables and served in this
soup. It is in __East-Flemish dialect of Ghent__.

These texts on "classical" music were not allways innocent.
(so I give no transscription, the text is silly anyhow)

Guido and Koen are joking, in the __dialect of Ghent__ (East-Flanders),
with the "Englishman" in a non-sense song, that has actually 3 parts

The Englishmen, strongly present in Brussels, can well defend themself
though. One of them, "Mister John", even got one of his songs (about
Belgians) for weeks on belgian hitparades.

Hello Lowlanders

You know Ron's page containing an increasing number of language-versions
of "The Wren". Some time ago I added the Eastern Friesland Low Saxon
version.
I did this not only in the alternative orthography I proposed for
Eastern
Friesland Platt (LS) but also (co-working with Ron) in a German based
orthography and in phonetic writing.
But as helpful a phonetic writing may be, it never replaces listening to
the real sound of a language.
For this reason I recorded a spoken version and posted it on the web
under
<http://members.tripod.de/foto_weigelt/sound/sound.htm>.
At the moment there is yet a technical problem with direct listening but
You can already open or download the sound-file (about 2,5 MB)from a
compressed zip-archive.
I hope to solve the problem with uploading the uncompressed file soon.
