Dear Lowlanders,
Good New Year. I was reaing you etemolgy discussion and saw the
reference to Mate. In Scandinavian we can use the word matros for
sailor. I have always assumed it came from German and eventually Latin.
Could Matros have been shortened and Mat used for future words in the
lowland languages? Regards David Strommen.
Maat_ was an important word in Middle Low Saxon (Low German). It meant
not
only things like 'companion', 'chum' etc. and also nautical 'sailor' or
'crew
member' (e.g., _Schippsmaat_, _Kocksmaat_, _Decksmaat_ etc.), as it does
in
the modern dialects,
