There is a smooth continuum from shifting between slightly
different styles or different dialects/sociolects etc. all the
way to shifting between unrelated languages, and so different
linguists define code switching somewhat differently: the safest
and most helpful thing is usually to briefly state what you mean
by code-switching. People do often use the term to refer to
alternation between mutually intelligible varieties.
