These "stepped gable tops" are also a distinctive feature of
Scottish architecture (we call them "crawsteps"). You see
them all over the place in every town in Scotland but I don't
think I've ever seen any at all in England or Wales.
I've never heard of anyone having large windows and no curtains
in Scotland, however - though houses with no doors (nor even
doorways) on the ground floor were once common!
