In this list the question of classification of varieties in the Rhine
area has been raised several times.

Yesterday, Saturday, at the joint symposium of Veldeke, the VLDN and the
Amt für Rheinische Landeskunde (University of Bonn), the maps of the
latter organization show to be relatively consistent with maps used in
the Benelux.

"Südniedertfränkisch" is used on all maps for the area going from Tienen
in Belgium to Wuppertal in Germany, delimited by the ik-ICH (North) and
the MAKEN-machen isoglosses (South), borned by "Brabantisch" in the
West, "Kleverländisch" in the North, "Westfälisch" in the North-East,
Ripuarisch in the South-East and French - it should be "walloon"- in the
South-West.

Sole difference with Benelux maps is that we usually cut off the Tienen
area in the South-West (and classify it as Brabantish), and use the
Gete-isoglosses East of Tienen in the West, cf. several maps in the
chapter Limburgish on web page:

At the Symposium, dialect use by people aged 15-20 was estimated by
university professors at:
- close to 0 perc. in the Westfalen area
- close to 10 perc. in the Kleverländisch area
- 30-40 perc. in the Dutch Limburgish area
- close to 20 perc. in Belgian Limburg. Here we apparently have a very
rapid switch to Dutch (or eventually a mixture of standard Dutch and
Belgian soap-Dutch)

Saturday evening I went to see a theater play in South-Limburgish
dialect in Montzen (in the area called Northern Alt-Belgium, South of
Aachen, that switched completely from German to French in 1945, after
this area was incorporated in the Reich 1940-1944)

Though the street language is French-only, for the occasion, the place,
with 350 seats, was completely sold out (and had also been sold-out the
week before). I saw several kids aged 10-20 in the public. Parents often
speak dialect to the kids, the kids reply in French though. The
performers spoke a very Limburgish Platt, without French accent.
