I heard about something on the radio called the Rosetta project, it's an
attempt to catalogue as many of the world's languages as possible before
they
disappear. Estimates are 6000 languages, most of which will disappear
within
the next century. Thought you might be interested, here's the web site:

The message and website above came from my niece. I checked it out
and found it very educational. If you are a language nut like I am,
you can have lots of fun reading through it. Do you know the name of
the gypsy language spoken in Finland? Did you know that more people
speak Zulu than....? Great source for trivia questions, right Wayne?
If you are a native speaker of an endangered language, you can make
contributions to the archives. Harry, have you already been on this
project? The retired, not so old, Estonians in FL could maybe use
such a project, but I don't have their email addresses.

Thanks for the useful tip, Yogi.

I took a look at the site and found it rather exciting (to use a well-worn
Americanism).  I can also see that it needs quite a bit of help.  For
example, "Low Saxon" is listed under "Germany" (with alternative names),
but not under "Indo-European" and also not under "Netherlands."  The
biblical sample given for Low Saxon is a passage from Genesis in *Old*
Saxon.  The Roma ("Gypsy") languages Romani (Romanès) and Sinti are not
listed under "Germany."  "West Frisian" (for Westerlauwer Frisian) is
listed under "Netherlands" and mistakenly also under "Germany" ... and
"Denmark" (! - where Frisian has not survived as far as we are informed),
while Sater (East) Frisian and the various North Frisian varieties (and
several of these should be seen as separate languages) are not listed under
"Germany."  Scots does not seem to be listed at all.  Also, in many
instances "accented" letters are displayed incorrectly.

I suggest that, rather than criticize the good folks who spend so much time
and effort on this potentially useful project, we here at Lowlands-L offer
them our assistance at the very least in our own area of "expertise."  I
will offer some assistance with "Germany," "Netherlands," "Low Saxon" and
"Frisian" as soon as I can find some time for it.  This is not to say that
others should not do so.  The more the better.  Also, our Limburgish,
Zeelandic and Scots experts ought to get heard.  I am sending a blind copy
of this to Jim Mason (rosetta at longnow.org), the director, so he knows what
is about to come his way.
