Many of you, no doubt, will be interested in the following Dutch language web

It is dedicated to _faux amis_ in the very closely related languages Afrikaans
and Dutch.  _Faux amis_ are words or expressions that are or seem to be
related but have different meanings and are used differently.  In the words of
Marcel Bas, the originator:

"Valse Vrienden zijn Afrikaanse woorden die ook in het Nederlands voorkomen,
maar die in het Nederlands nét iets anders betekenen. Bij de ontmoeting van
Nederlandssprekenden met Afrikaanssprekenden kunnen zich wel eens grappige
spraakverwarringen voordoen. Evenals bij de Roepstem-bladzijde
'Afrikaans-Nederlands; Snaakse verskille' (klik hier) zal hier de nadruk
liggen op interessante en tot nadere kennismaking met het Afrikaans
uitnodigende woorden uit die rijke, kostbare taal die nadruk liggen op de
interessante verschillen die de leek dikwijls zal laten denken: "Hoe kan het
zo veranderen?". Vaak, echter, is het het Nederlands in Europa geweest waar
woorden een semantische verschuiving hebben meegemaakt (e.g. de woordbetekenis
is veranderd) waardoor er nu een grappig effect ontstaat."

The more closely two or more languages are related the more they are mutually
intelligible, and it is especially among them that lots of _faux amis_ are
found, among the Germanic languages for instance between Afrikaans, Dutch,
Zeelandic, Low Saxon (Low German), Limburgish, ("High") German and Yiddish as
one group, probably also between the Scandinavian languages as one group and
between English and Scots as another group, even between English dialects or
at least between American and non-American English.  Some _faux amis_ are
"funny" and make for party entertainment.  For example, anyone familiar with
Yiddish and German will automatically and correctly link Yiddish _yoykh_
(German spelling _jojch_) ~ _youkh_ (German spelling _jouch_) with its German
cognate _Jauche_, but while the Yiddish word, archaically, means 'soup' or
'broth' (e.g., _goldene yoykh_ for the famous and all-curing "golden" chicken
soup), the German cognate means _liquid manure_ (as does _Jüüch_ in a minority
of Low Saxon dialects, the equivalent being _Ardel_ ~ _Addel_ in the majority
of dialects).
