Dear Lowlanders, Here's my attempt at translating what turned out to be
an
American hymn that was translated into German in the late 19th century.
In
my own humble opinion, the German lyric is more imaginative and poetic
than
the English.  I invite your suggestions, comments, and corrections to my
Plautdietsch.  The words in brackets are either words that I could not
find, or indicate guesses at proper verb tense.

Ich Weiß Einen Strom
(Opp Hüagdietsch)

1.  Ich weiß einen Stron dessen herrliche Flut
    Fließt wunderbar stille durchs Land
    Doch strahlet und glänzt er wie feurige Glut
    Wem ist dieses Wasser bekannt?

O Seele ich bitte dich komm
Und such diesen herrlichen Strom.
Sein Wasser fließt frei und mächtiglich!
O glaub's es fließet für dich.

2.  Wohin dieser Strom sich nur immer ergießt
    Da jubelt und jauchzet das Herz,
    Das nunmehr den kölichsten Segen genießt
    Erlöset von Sorgen und Schmertz.

3.  Der Strom ist gar tief und sein Wasser ist klar.
    Es schmeket so lieblich und fein.
    Es heilet die Kranken und stärkt wunderbar
    Ja machet die Unriensten rein.

4.  Wen dürstet der komme und trinke sich satt
    So rufet der Geist und die Braut,
    Nur wer in dem Strome gewaschen sich hat
    Das Angesicht Gottes einst schaut.

1.  Ekj weet eene Stroom fonn de Harlijche [Flut=Floot?]
    Rane wundaboa stille durch'e Laund
    Doch strolt un glaunst äa wo fiarijch Gloot
    Wäm es dies Woatasch bekaunt?

O Seele ekj bitte die komm
Un säkj daut harlijche Stroom
Sien Woata jewaultijch rane so frie
O jleewe daut rane fe die.

2.  Wuaemma daut Stroom sikj bloos emma [erjätst?]
    Doa moake schaftijch de Hoat
    Wäaemma de kostboaste Säajen [jenäjest?]
    Aufleewre fonn Sorje un Schmoat

3.  De Stroom es goa deep un sien Woata es kloa
    Et smakje so schmock un so fein
    Daut heele de Kranke un stoakt wundaboa
    Je moakt de onnreinste rein.

4.  Wäa darschte dee komm un drinkje sikj sautt
    Soo roopt de Jeist un de Brüt.
    Nu wäa enem Stroom jewausche sikj haud
    De Aunjesicht Gottes eenst [schaut=?]

P. S. I'm particularly proud of the way the third line of the chorus
worked
out so I could preserve the rhyme.  I only hope I preserved the sense of
the lyric in using the word jewaultijch as a substitution for the High
German mächtiglich.  Along that same line, I wonder about using the
word
rane for the High German fließt.  Am I correct in that they both convey
the sense of a river flowing?  Some of you native speakers could
probably
improve upon my choices. Yours, Jim Krause
