Actually, It is a littlem more complicated than that, Ron. When the war
ended, the churches stayed with English for the most part (I have this
on good authority from my Grandfather, Paul Yoder, who was a German
Reformed minister here in southern York County PA). it was still the
"street" language in the late 1940s when I was just a boy, but it faded
as the children learnt Deitsch, but used English exclusively in school;
this was re-enforced as non-Deitsch teacers were more and more
employed. My Grandfather used to conduct a Deitsch service once a year
at Stone Church (near Glenville PA), and the church was always packed
for that service. I agree that Woodrow Wilson's heavy-handed policy
sped up the process, but I think the process was going to occur anyway.
As "minorities" get accepted and integrated into the majority, some of
their culture enters the majority culture and language (there are
Deitsch words in use in PA and even outside PA [e.g., "spook"]), but the
majority culture and language overwhelms theirs. We were never far
outside the general American culture anyway except by geography. We
fought in the Revolution (Muhlenburg was a major general) and later
wars, even elected a governor (Pennypacker) early in the 19th century,
and practiced the majority religion in the USA (Protestantism) even if
in different denominations.

It just strikes me that hatred can kill (or steel up!) a culture, but
love can just be just as deadly.
