Subject: Place Names
Dear All
Fiete asked:
Wat meent "Jork" or "York" (*New York*, schall P.
Stuyvesant grünn't
hebben, oobers ook *York* in't Ingelte)? Ick kann door
ne' recht watt
passend tau finnen, in uns Lowland-Mundoort.
I'm not entirely sure, but I think York was previously
Danish: Jorvik, which was a corruption of the previous
non-Germanic name. Therefore I don't think that
there's a low-German connection. However, the change
from Jorvik to York might have been based on a more
Anglo-Saxon and thus Lowlands feel to the name.

Leve Friedrich-Wilhelm,
Ik bün en nietogang to Leeglanners un dach, dat ik man gliks en
annern Platdüütschen schriif. York weer fröer in de Ool Ingelsche Tiid
düsse naam wat mit eofor, also ever/hauer (hast.: Eber) to doon het
Amsterdam mid New York verdrung.
Aalens gode, leve Leeglänner,
