In response to Ross Ahlfeld's question about "Black Peter" I wrote:

Sorry. I didn't mean this literally but idiomatically, in other words
that I vaguely remember hearing or reading about _De swatte Peter_.
In our Lower Elbe tradition this guy (who does the dirty work =
punishing the naughty children) accompanying the _Wiehnachtsmann_ is
called _Knecht Ruppert_ (= German _Knecht Ruprecht_, _Knecht_ 'helper' =
English "knight"). I believe in some (farwestern?) traditions he
actually does accompany _Sünnerklaas_ (Santa Claus) on December 6.
