A'v decidit on a simple solution tae aa this, in the form
o the "Omnigethrum" that can be fund eenou on the ScotsteXt
menu bar. This is a page ye can dounload zipped texts an
illustrates fae, wi for ornar aa o a makar's warks in ae
dounload. Whiles the illustrates is pairt o the main dounload,
whiles they'r separate - ma ettle for the nou is tae try an
keep ilka dounload tae ablo ae meenit on a ornar 56kps modem.
The current pages'll be kept juist they wey they ar, forby
they'll keep growin whan a text fae the Omnigethrum gits tae
whaur its basic text is guid eneuch for "shop windae" display.
This solves aa the abuin in thir weys:

Tak tent that this fourth pynt means ScotsteXt is able tae
tak onything ye micht want tae contribute (o sufficient
quality - nae mistaks in the Scots, onywey!). Some ideas
for things a body micht want tae pit up:
o critical essays on the text;
o personal reminiscences that enlichten the text;
o educational maiter, eg comprehension tests;
o results o textual analysis;
o translates intae ither langages;
o &c (stap yer ain ideas in here!).

a sixteen-volume edition o Victorian Scots poetry scanned in -
1,500 poets! - but the'r nae profit involved in that for masel),

Some of you will be familiar with y ScotsteXt site at
http://scotstext.org/ where a library of texts in Scots
is available for selection and display.
I've been thinking over some of the things that's wrong with
the current way o doing things on the site, and I suppose these
are:
1. there's no way (besides getting clever with Perl & LWP :)
of downloading a large amount of text such as all of Burn's
works; I don't think this is a good thing, since the whole
aim of ScotsteXt is to disseminate these texts - the display
we have at the moment is nice enough, but it doesn't encourage
downloading, copying or text processing, although I want to
encourage this sort of thing;
2. there's no way of dealing with special kinds of text, such
as the proverbs, which is too big to present on one page, and
yet is too big (and individul proverbs are too numerous) to
present one per page; I would sometimes like to do other kinds
of presentations, but the display format we have is too limiting;
3. it takes a long time to get a text into a condition where
it can be put up for display: I have a huge collection of
scanned texts on disks which are god enough for many purposes
but it will be a long time before I can get them all good enough
for presentation on the site;
4. there's nowhere I can put any "extras" such as educational
materials or critical essays.
I've decided on a simple solution to all this, in the form o
the "Omnium gatherum", which can be found currently on the
ScotsteXt menu bar. This is a page from which you can download
zipped texts an illustrations, normally with all of an author's
works in one download. Sometimes the illustrations are part of
the main download, sometimes they're separate - my aim for now
is to try to keep each download to less than one minute on an
ordinary 56kps modem. The current pages will be kept just as
they are, except that they'll keep growing when a text from the
Omnium gatherum gets to where its basic text is good enough for
"shop window" display.
This solves all of the above problems as follows:
1. you can download a whole author's works or anthology in one
go, usually in under a minute;
2. I can put up any kind of text or illustration, as long as it
can be stored in a file;
3. I can upload rough copies of the texts as soon as they're
scanned (well, there is a delay while I create the README file
and suchlike, but it's much quicker than having to wait for it
to be perfected);
4. I can put any other relevant materials I receive into the zip
file as soon as it's ready.
Note that this fourth point means ScotsteXt is able to take
anything ye may want to contribute (of sufficient quality - no
mistakes in the Scots, anyway, though we can help you with Scots
or you may write in English). Some ideas for things you might
want contribute:
o critical essays on the text;
o personal reminiscences that illuminate the text;
o educational materials, eg comprehension tests;
o results of textual analysis;
o translations into other languages;
o &c (insert your own ideas here!).
There's no mony involved in ScotsteXt (I must qualify that with
the fact that I'm applying for a grant to pay for having a sixteen-
volume edition of Victorian Scots poetry scanned in - 1,500 poets!
- but there's no profit involved in that for myself), so we can't
pay for contributions - however, there is the credit, the chance to
have your say on the texts, and if it's your own work, the copyright
remains with you. Let me know in advance about anything you're
thinking of contributing, so as not to waste your time on unsuitable
material.
Currently there are just four downloads in the Omnium gatherum, but
two of them aren't available yet on the main part of the site: these
are the works of Robert Henryson and the works of William Dunbar -
complete as far as I know - so these will be worth a visit for fans
of the Makars. The other things are an anthology of student poetry
from Scottish universities, and the whole collection of David Herd's
Scots proverbs.

Sandy,
Looking at your website, effort and plans, what comes to mind to
adequately express my feeling of awe is German _Alle Achtung!_ and
Hebrew _Kol hakavod!_ (both "All the respect/esteem/honor/awe/attention
[to you]!"). Obviously, you are rendering an important service, not
only to Scots speakers.
I would certainly be pleased to chip in in whatever modest ways I can,
especially once we have gotten through our current project of creating
introductions to the Lowlands languages, to which you have kindly
contributed amply (and for which we still need some help from volunteer
writers and translators).

What specifically do you have in mind in this regard? Translations of
the index, introduction and annotation, or of actual literary pieces?
