From: "Friedrich-Wilhelm Neumann" <Friedrich-Wilhelm.Neumann at epost.de>
Subject: "Literature"
Dear Low- and Leeglanners,
about a *hundred years ago* I read a book entitled, if I remember well,
"Till Uulenspeegel und Lamme Goedzack". It contained partly amazing,
partly
very "black" stories about those two guys and played on the background
of
the "War of the Geuses" against the Spaniards (Duke of Alba etc) at the
17th(?) century in the Netherlands. It was written in German, though I
don't
know, if it was Dutch in origin. I have lost this book in a "War of
Roses"
years ago.
My eight years old son is very interested in it, since I had told him
some
stories I still remembered.
Does anybody know it, and when yes, where to get this book still today?
And- by the way- does anybody know something about the historical truth
of
these guys doing their patriotic jokes and cruelties in the Netherlands?
As far as I know, the person of "Till Eulenspiegel" is historical proved
(there even exists a monument in the town of Ratzeburg, not far from
Hamburg, and I remember he shall have been in Plön, not far from there,
too)
in Germany. I don't think it to be impossible that he really had been in
the
Netherlands; he *was* a real rebel also in his German version and
stories.
Beste Greutens
Fiete.
