Beste Laelanders,

Na aanleiding van Mathieu en Luc se verwysing na woorde vir die geluide
wat
diere maak:
In Afrikaans _tjank_ hondsoorte. Hiënas _lag_ (hulle _giggel_ nie soos
in
Duits nie). Leeus _brul_ en katte _kerm_ (behalwe as hulle _miaau_ of
van
tevredenheid _spin_)
Terloops, as ons van n tier praat, maak ons die geluid _njar!_ maar
dis
waarskynlik nie algemeen nie.
I must confess _njar_ is not known to me or my Afrikaans collegues so
it
appears to be localised in its usage.
However, as a English speaking student of Afrikaans/Nederlands I was
always amazed at the _raak sêgoed_ Afrikaans has. The word _kerm_
reminded
me of the expression _Kerm soos 'n kat oor 'n derm_ which in English
means
to cry or complain about nothing (The English seems so much blander.).
Is
there anything similar in the other lowlanders languages?
