I was wondering if a term that describes the language status
of Scots actually exists.

Such a term would have a meaning something like, "A collection
of dialects which, though not necessarily mutually intelligable
in speech, are related through simple, regular processes that
enable them to be represented as one language through a shared
spelling system."

It would include mainland dialects of Scots, and probably Ullans,
but not insular dialects such as Shetlandic.

Possible terms would be "polylect", "multilect" or "panlect".
I'd like to be able to say, in discussion with those who take
a scientific approach to language, "the Scots polylect", or
"Scots, as a polylect...". This would enable me to make clear
exactly what it is that separates Scots from English as languages.

Does a term for this already exist, or do I have to chose one
from the above list?
