This is something A'v aye been ficklt aboot. A aye thocht
A wis spaekin English at St Andraes (forby wi ither Scots
spaekin students - an whatever onybody says, the war plenty
o thame), but whan A gaed doun tae Wales A'd a job sortin
oot hou tae talk sae's fowk could lift me, an that got me
wonderin juist what wis't A spak at St Andraes.

A dout it wis some kin o mixtur o Scots an what A'd liftit
o English fae readin, on tap o the fack that the foreign
students thare wad been uized wi Scottish accents.

As for the idea that St Andraes students is snobs - that's
juist pure typecastin, aiblins fae the wey we wears thon
muckle gouns an aathing. A can fine mind bein oot at denners
in black tie an scarlet gouns - an still talkin Scots tae
thame as wad talk it back!

A mind o talkin tae this chiel at a denner ae nicht whaur
the wine wis gittin ca'd roond at a bonny rate, an the mair
we drank the mair he spak Scots (like A says, A dinna ken
what A wad been spaekin tae start wi, but A dout he'd a
could heard A wis a Scots spaeker). In the end A asked him
what kin o wark he did, an he says he wis the professor o
Pure Mathematics! Weel, A'd read twa o his beuks an A kent
the meenit he says it that it wis the truith - but it juist
shows, the'r plenty Scots spaekers aboot in aa kin o places,
it's a question o whether ye lat yer ain Scots show.

Kin o a peety he wisna the professor o English, tho, eh?

A dinna dout him, for he says that he
On nae accoont wad ever tell a lee.
