I have the idea the DVD market is booming over here.
I bought and enjoyed some classics in the last few days:
"Eraserhead" (David Lynch),
"Ansiktet" (The Face (UK), The Magician (USA), Ingmar Bergman),
"Throne of Blood" (a Japanese Macbeth by Kurosawa)
This afternoon I found in the Brussels Fnac (City 2 center) "La vie de
Jésus", a very remarkable film playing in Bailleul (Belle in Flemish
France) (DVD, Editions Montparnasse, PAL Region 2, EAN 3-346030-006405,
French only, no subtitles). although some old people in Belle still
speak Flemish, the youngsters in this film speak French only (The actors
are not professional and the French is colloquial French, incidentally
poorly articulated).
(Details of the film: http://chevy.imdb.com/Title?0120448)
It's about unemployed youngsters over there, semi-skin heads, racistic
anti-arabic, finally killing an Magreb young man).Since there is a lot
of motor driving in the film it's at the very same time a very beautiful
introduction to the landscape of the Flemish "Houtland" in Northern
France)
Some Dutch and Belgian films recently got awards in the US and are
released on DVD actually.
The Belgian film "Iedereen Beroemd" (in Dutch, Belgian Dutch),
cf. details at http://us.imdb.com/Title?0209037 ,
got a 2001 Oscar nominiation for the "Best Foreign Language Film"
DVD A-video DR90074, EAN 8-716777-000342, PAL Region 2
The Dutch film "Karakter" (with the Belgian Decleir in a key role)
cf. details at http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119448 ,
actually won the 1998 Oscar for the "Best Foreign Language Film"
DVD Valkieser 92880 SDN3, EAN 8-714576-928805, PAL Region 2
What I'm wondering: one finds obviously a lot of US, UK, French, Italian
DVDs in the shops over here. One finds Danish films (Festen, Pelle, ..)
but it's hard to find anything German. Are there "good" German films on
DVD on the market, that reflect the actual social life in Northern
Germany, preferably with conversations in Low German?
Thanks for replying.
Regards,
Roger
