   Gistern heff ik vun d'n Börgermeester vun de Stadt Leer in Oostfreesland
(Neddersassen, Düütschland) twee Breven kregen.  In d'n eenen Breev schreev'
he, dat de Wilhelmine-Siefkes-Pries-Fier nu för een Dag later plaant is as
ehrder künnig maakt wöör; se is nu an d'n Fredag, d'n 1. Februar 2002, avends
Klock halvig acht.
   D'n tweeden Breev', ook up ("Hoog"-)Düütsch schreven, geev' ik Ju ünnen

   Besünners hoog upkeken heff ik, as ik "niederdeutsche/nedersaksische"
lees'!  Ja, de Stadt Leer, dicht bi de düütsch-nedderlandsche Grenss, gaiht
mit 'n good Biespill vöran: se slütt in ehr Künnigmaken de
Neddersassisch-Snackers un -Schrieverslüüd' up de annere Sied vun de Grenss
mit in, wieldes de mehrsten annern noorddüütschen Städer, Organisatschonen un
Instituten, de wat för "Platt" doot, noch so doon wüllt, as höört us ole
Sassenspraak batts an de Grenss up. Bravo, Börgermeester Kellner un
Börgerslüüd' vun Leer!  Nu, ja, dat mit hollandsch "nedersaksisch" staats
düütsch "niedersächsisch" för "neddersassisch" kann ik verstahn un vergeven.
De mehrsten Noorddüütschen weett ja sülven nich, dat us "Platt" de
Sassenspraak vun 't neddere Land is un dat se ook in de oosternen
nedderlandschen Provinssen bruukt wardt, neem se noch akrater "Neersassies",
"Nedersaksies", u.s.w. nöömt wardt.  Ook verbindt de mehrsten Düütschen
"neddersassisch" un "niedersächsisch" man bloots mit dat noorddüütsche Land
Neddersassen (Niedersachsen).  Hunnerde vun Jahren vun Ahnweten kann 'n nich
vun een Dag up d'n annern wegwischen.  Wichtig is, dat wi us över de Grenss
hin de Hannen geven un tohoop us gemeensame Spraak wiederhelpen doot, wenn se
ook as Aschenpüüstersch-Spraak mit de Tied up de een Sied düütsche un up de
annere Sied hollandsche Klören afkregen hett.

Dear Lowlanders,
   Yesterday I received two letters from the mayor of the City of Leer in
Eastern Friesland (Lower Saxony, Germany).  In one of them he writes that the
awarding ceremony of the Wilhelmine Siefkes Prize is now being planned for one
day later than initially announced; it will now take place on Friday, February
1, 2002, at 7:30 p.m.
   Below you will find the wording of the other letter, which is also written
in ("High") German.  You can find further information about this prize under
"Literature Prizes" here:

   I was pleasantly surprised to read "niederdeutsche/nedersaksische" (Low
German/Low Saxon) in reference to the language.  It looks as though the City
of Leer, being situated near the border between Germany and the Netherlands,
is taking the lead by including in its announcements speakers and writers of
Low Saxon who live on the other side of the border, while most other North
German cities, organizations and institutes that deal with "Platt" keep
pretending that our old Saxon language stops abruptly at the border.  Bravo,
Mayor Kellner and residents of Leer! Well, I can understand and forgive the
choice of Dutch "nedersaksisch" in place of German "niedersächsisch."  After
all, most North Germans themselves are not aware that our "Platt" is the Saxon
language of the lowlands and that it is used in the eastern provinces of the
Netherlands as well, where it is still called, more accurately, "Neersassies,"
"Nedersaksies," etc. ("Low Saxon").  Most Germans only associate
"neddersassisch" and "niedersächsisch" ("Low Saxon") with the North German
state of Lower Saxony (Neddersassen/Niedersachsen).  Centuries of ignorance
cannot be undone overnight.  What is important is that we reach out to each
other across the border in our effort to benefit our common language, even
though over time shades of German and Dutch have rubbed off on this Cinderella
language on the respective sides of the border.

Wilhelmine-Siefkes-Preis 2002

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

auf Anregung der Lyrikerin Greta Schoon (1909 - 1991) vergibt die Stadt Leer
seit 1990 alle vier Jahre den ,,Wilhelmine-Siefkes-Preis'' für
niederdeutsche/nedersaksische Literatur.

Durch diesen Preis soll das Werk der bedeutenden Leeraner Schriftstellerin
Wilhelmine Siefkes geehrt und die niederdeutsche bzw. nedersaksische Literatur
gefördert werden.

Der Preis wird nunmehr zum vierten Mal vergeben. Das Preiskuratorium des
Wilhelmine-Siefkes-Preises hat einstimmig Herrn Siegfried Kessemeier, Münster,
als Preisträger gewählt.

Die Preisverleihung ist am Freitag, 1. Februar 2002 um 19.30 Uhr in Leer, im
Festsaal des Rathauses (Altbau), Rathausstraße 1.
