Dear Lowlanders,

As many of you know by now, some of us are working on a series of online
introductions to the Lowlands language varieties.  This series will be
interconnected with the Lowlands-L welcoming series all of you are
familiar with.

The "blurb" team needs your cooperation, among other things with
supplying brief (50-200 words) language samples, preferably along with
translations into a (for us) "major" standard language (e.g., English,
Dutch, Afrikaans, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, or any
Scandinavian one), alternatively a short glossary of the more obscure
words or expressions as a translation guide.  We need such language
samples for the following languages:

English:
I have Old English and Middle English samples or can easily gather them,
though I would be grateful for any particularly interesting brief
pieces.  It would be nice to have one or two pre-modern English samples
of "non-mainstream" varieties, i.e., lesser-known Old and Middle English
dialects.  Also, it would be really nice to have a small assortment of
samples of Modern English dialect writing from all over the world
(British, Irish, Australian, New Zealand, South African, American,
Canadian, Indian, etc.), again with Standard English translations or
glossaries.

Dutch:
We need up to 6 dialect samples besides a sample of Modern Written
Dutch.  By "Dutch" I mean mostly Hollandish and Randstad varieties,
excluding Saxon, Limburgish, Zeelandic and (West) Flemish ones (which
will have their own blurbs).  Brabantish is all right, though we already
have a Brabantish sub-blurb (under "Dutch") with a language sample.  We
also need a couple of samples of Old Dutch (Old Low Franconian) and
Middle Dutch.

We also still need one or two sample each of Ulster, Shetland and Orkney
Scots.

Anyone who wishes to write or collaborate on the English, Appalachian,
Dutch, Zeelandic, (West) Flemish and Afrikaans blurbs should contact me
(sassisch at yahoo.com).  Also, we would welcome brief (sub-)blurbs about
any Lowlands-based Pidgin or Creole varieties (yes, including
Afrikaans-based ones), along with 1-2 language samples each.  You may
write these (brief!) blurbs in any Lowlands language, or in German or
French, whichever is most comfortable to you.  Other people will
translate them.

Main blurbs loosely follow this general structure: Name, History, Area,
Number of speakers, Status, Public Services, Education, Media,
Miscellaneous, Language Sample(s).

Sub-blurbs have no prescribed format and are brief (up to 500 words)
introductions to specific subordinate varieties, and preferably they
should come with a short sample.  For instance, Gary Taylor wrote a
sub-blurb about Estuary English, which will be linked to from the main
blurb "English."  If people were to write sub-blurbs about, say,
Australian English or about South Asian English varieties, these pieces
would join Gary's in a lineup of subordinate articles under "English."

Some of us have been working pretty hard on this project, and it would
be nice if some of you would join us by volunteering as writers,
translators (English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese) and/or
consultants/editors.
