Hi Luc,
a similar word to "waal" - "welsch" - exists in German, although it has
fallen out of use and is nowadays practically only used in the word
"Kauderwelsch" - an unintelligible language or mixture of languages, the
kind the English would call "Double Dutch". It used to denote strange
and
unfamiliar (often Southern) languages, people, customs, etc., and was
also
sometimes more specifically applied to mean "Italian". Please note that
people from Wales are called "Welsh", which is basically the same as the
German word.
Walnuts are "Walnüsse" in German, but used to be called "Welschnüsse",
meaning "Italian nuts".
