Somehow I didn't get the start of this thread, so I may have missed some
essential point in the discussion, but as far as I am aware, _punnet_ is
an English word, not a Scots/Scottish English one. My wife, who is from
Lancashire, certainly does not regard it as a Scots/Scottish word. My
Chambers Dictionary, usually very good at identifying Scotticisms, makes
no comment about it.
On the other hand, it does SOUND like a Scots word, probably because of
the similarity to _bunnet_ 'cap'!
