I think also that politics do have a important influence on languages.
For example in Flanders the official language is Dutch, but in the 19th
century there was also a big group in parliament who wanted German to
become the official language and they almost made it. The fact that
Dutch
is now the official language had a enormous influence on the local
dialects. Now I'am speaking "oostends" with Dutch accents, If German had
become the official language i would probably be speaking the same
dialect but with German accents. The border between Dutch and German is
not a linguistic one, but a political one. So politics is one aspect of
the discussion but also a dangerous aspect.
