Philip Hensher has written a thought-provoking article but he fails to
grasp what a dialect really is.

Walloon is not French as it is spoken in Belgian. Particularly, French
speakers in Brussels, the Belgian capital, consider (correctly from a
linguistic point of view) that they speak French, i.e. the
language/dialect of France. Walloon, where it exists (in the south, and
standard French is far more widespread), does so alongside French.

So, if you like, its speakers are bilingual. This is also true of Scots
and Flemish. Maybe the common factor is that Dutch, English, and French
are seen by Flemings, Scots and Walloons as the politically-backed
dialects of an alien politico-cultural sphere.

The English language was built for English needs, just as its detachment
from England (and the use of terms like British/American English) was
achieved for US/UK political/cultural needs.

Scots and Flemish are personal. They are expressions of identity, of
common belonging. A Flemish politician will speak dialect when he
canvasses for votes because "Dutch" is what you learn at school, and it
sounds bookish. Dutch, however much it is the official language of the
Flemish community, is first and foremost the language of the
Netherlands.

To paraphrase an old beer advert: Dialects refresh the parts official
languages cannot reach.

I strongly disagree with Philip Hensher about register. Could you really
write a 200 page thesis about splitting the atom in Scots that would be
immediately understood by another Scots-speaking scientist? Oh really,
O'Reilly?

Danny, wat u schrijft hieronder klopt langs geen kanten:

U verwart heel zeker "German" met "Nederduytsch", toen ook een andere
benaming voor het Nederlands! Dit "Nederduytsch" had niets te zien met
"German" of het "Duits" of "Duytsch"!
In 1830, bij de stichting van België, werd het Frans uitgeroepen als
enige
officieële taal, voordien was het Nederlands of toen ook het
Nederduytsch
genoemd de officieële taal. Die grote groep in het parlement pleitte
voor
het opnieuw invoeren van het Nederlands in het eentalig Nederlandstalig
Vlaanderen en in Brussel, wat uiteindelijk  uitliep op de
vernederlandsing
van de Universiteiten, de Bestuurlijke Administratie en de Kerkelijke
Administratie. Heel de Vlaamse Beweging stond in dit teken want
taalverknechting werd aangevoeld als machtsverknechting; het woord
"macht"
vind je nog weer in de benaming van het ledenblad van het ACW, "De
Volksmacht"...

In 1868, heeft baron P. De Ryckholt een boek geschreven met de
veelzeggende
titel:"LE FLAMAND, Langue Primordiale, Mère de toutes les Langues", wat
er
op wijst dat, naast het Nederlands en het Nederduytsch, ook nog de
benaming
Vlaamsch gebruikt werd om de taal van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden te
benoemen.

Wat het "Oostends" betreft moet gezegd worden dat deze prachtige
gewesttaal
zich bitter weinig heeft aangetrokken van de onderdrukking van de
officiële
taal net zoals in de andere West-Vlaamse gewesten.
