Dear Lowlanders,
As a child between 9 and 12 years of age I lived in a central New York
community that was more than half of German descent, but I never heard
German spoken. We always used "Alley, alley in free!" in tag games, but
it
never occurred to me it could come from German. Later on when I acquired
a
smattering of words in different languages, I assumed it was the French
"allez," in spite of the fact our area had no French people.
"Alles" makes sense.
Jorge Potter
