Leve Leeglanners,
In 't Neddersassische (Nedderdüütsche, Plattdüütsche) gifft 't dat
Egenschupswoord "slee" (or "slei" ~ "slaai" in welke Dialekten).  (Kann
wesen, dat 't vun *"sle(i)de" > "sleed'" ~ "sleid'" afkümmt un
womööglich in welke Dialekten noch so seggt wardt, man weten do ik dat
nich.)  Dat beschrifft so 'n stump Geföhl an de Tehnen, wenn 'n wisse
Saken eten hett, so as wisse sure Saken, ook t.B. Spinaat or Süürken
(Roden Hinnik, düütsch _Sauerampfer_, latiensch _Rumex acetosa_),
besünners roh eten.  Denn seggt 'n so wat as "Dat föhl sik an de Tehnen
so slee an."  Dat lett, dat 't in 't ("Hoog"­)Düütsche daar för keen
Woord gifft.  Ik kann mi ook up keen ingelsch Woord daarför besinnen.
Wen hett dat maal _astringent_ nöömt.  Ik wüss maal 'n japaansch Woord
daar för, för dat Geföhl up de Tehnen, wenn 'n nich so gode or unriepe
Persimonen eten hett; man dat Woord heff ik middewiel vergeten.  Up
Nedderlandsch wöör dat sachs *_slie(d(e))_, *_slij(d(e))_ or
*_sle(ed(e))_ or so wat, up Afrikaans sachs *_slie_, *_sly_ or *_sle_ or
so wat, man so wat gifft 't apenbaar nich.

Dear Lowlanders,
In Low Saxon (Low German) there is the adjective _slee_ (pronounced
[slE.I], a bit like "sleigh") or _slei_ (~ _slaai_ [sla.I], pronounced a
bit like "sly").  (It is possible that it comes from and in some
dialects still is *_sle(i)de_ > _sleed'_ ~ _sleid'_, but I don't know
that.)  It describes the "blunt" or "dull" feeling on one's teeth after
eating certain things, such as certain sour things, also plants like
spinach and sorrel (_Rumex acetosa_), especially when raw.  You can say,
for instance, _Dat föhl sik an de Tehnen so slee an_ ("It feels so
_slee_ on the teeth").  Apparently there is no ("High") German
equivalent (cognate or otherwise).  Also, I cannot think of an
equivalent English word, but I remember someone once using "astringent"
for it.  I used to know a Japanese word for it, describing the feeling
on one's teeth after eating unripe or inferior persimmons, but I have
forgotten it.  In Dutch it would probably be something like
*_slie(d(e))_, *_slij(d(e))_ or *_sle(ed(e))_, in Afrikaans probably
something like *_slie_, *_sly_ or *_sle_, but apparently these do not
exist.  My questions: (1) Are there any cognates in other languages?
(2) What is the etymology of the word?  (3) Are there any words with the
same meaning in other languages?
