Dear Lowlanders,
I am delighted to finally be able to make this announcement. I have
seen it coming for a while now but promised to be quiet about it until
the matter was official.
I have it from our friend Caoimhín Ó Donnaíle (caoimhin at smo.uhi.ac.uk)
who runs the splendid minority-languages-dedicated site "Mion-chànanan
na h-Eòrpa | European minority languages"
http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/saoghal/mion-chanain/en/).
Caoimhín just sent me this announcement, among other things:

Sound investment
Tobar an Dualchais /Kist o Riches, the project led by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig
to conserve and digitise Gaelic and Scots sound recordings for online
use, has been allocated a Stage One award of £1.29 million by the
Heritage Lottery Fund. Project co-ordinator, Martin MacIntyre was
delighted:
"We have already secured a commitment of £800k in matching funding from
16 organisations and I am confident that a promise of £1.29 million from
the Heritage Lottery Fund will help greatly to encourage other bodies to
close the £500k gap."
</quote>
In short, this will ensure that lots of Gaelic and Scots sound
recordings will be digitized and made available online rather than
rotting away. Congratulations to Martainn Mac an t-Saoir/Martin
MacIntyre and everyone at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, to all our Scottish friends
and really to all of us who care about language! Let us hope that this
will serve as an inspiration to other language communities.
In his message to me, Caoimhín further wrote,

And thanks to everyone who filled in our online form.
