In Eastern Friesland we say "pro:ten" what means "to talk" (German:
sprechen, reden). The derived word "pro:t" means: gossip; phrase; mere
words; rumour (German: Gerede, Redensart,leere Worte, Gerücht) . But we
have a word for language as well. It is "tól" *(or in German based
orthography: Taal). We use this beside the other word "spróek"
(Spraak). "Tól" can also denote the special sound of a language and it
is
often used for smaller entities (such as dialects or local variants)
instead of "spróek" for the larger ones.
About somebody who was away for a while leaving no sign of life or
somebody
who was hidden we say:
häi gaf ghi:n tól of täiken**

[if the letters aren't displayed correctly: *t_o+accent-aigu_l **h_a-
Umlaut_i ....t_o+accent-aigu_l .... t_a-Umlaut_i_k_e_n]

Holger,

What you write about _pro:ten_ and _pro:t_ in Eastern Friesland Low
Saxon (Low German) -- which applies also to other far northwestern
dialects -- is by and large equivalent to _snacken_ (_snakken_) and
_Snack_ (_snak_) in most other dialect of the Northern (Low) Saxon
group.*

The verb _snacken_ primarily means 'to talk', 'to speak'.  The noun
_snack_ primarily means 'talk (e.g., around town)', 'rumor', 'gossip',
often 'silly/unfounded talk', 'nonsense' (much like German _Unsinn_ or,
even better, _Quatsch_).  I believe that this also applies to Danish
_snak_, which, besides '(idle) talk', 'chat', can also denote
'nonsense'.  Besides, the above, the other Northern Saxon dialects also
have _Spraak_ for 'language' (= Danish _sprog_).

* NB: I consider the Low Saxon dialects of Eastern Friesland, Oldenburg,
  Emsland, Groningen and Fryslân/Friesland (and perhaps also some of the
  dialects a little farther south on the Netherlands side of the border)
  a collection of subset groups of Northern (Low) Saxon, mostly set
  apart from the rest by Frisian substrates as a common main
  characteristic.
