So that's the origin of "black" - it really means "white"!
Interestingly, in Russian we have "синяк" (sinyak) for "black eye", a
derivative from the word "синий" ("sea blue"). Another name for "black eye",
used mainly by (very) young people, is "бланш" (blansh) > French "blanche",
with the first being applied to any body part as well, and the second - only
to eye.
