Hello again!

The technically minded may want to check out the Telsur Project of the
Linguistics Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania - with on line
maps from the Atlas of North American English. It shows the distinctiveness
of core Appal;achain speech, for example, which it calls "Inland South",
the distinctiveness of Charleston-Savannah dialect, and the border long
boundary of Canadian English which stretches ALONG THE  BORDER from the
west coast to a bit east of Montreal - beyond whichis a distinct major
dialect region called "Maritime Provinces."

On German dialects generally, I have unearthed a treasure - "Das
Mundartenbuch" by Julius Schaeffler, published in 1926 by Ferd. Duemmlers
in Berlin and Bonn. It presents dozens of local dialect samples - including
some "ausland" dialects - such as German dialects from Russia. There is a
map and general descriptions of  the main features of  nieder ober and
mittel deutsch dialects.

One big drawback - it is in the beautiful old Gothic typeface - which for
most of us I suspect is hard going. I wonder if it was ever reprinted in
Roman type? Worth checking you library for!
