Jesus...you don't take prisoners--you don't screw around. BLAM....its on
your card. I was just using one of the brand new Scots dictionaries to read
one of the Scots list serve messages...some of the words are a scream: gites
[or gytes] "idiots..."
Thereis a muckle carfuffle [big row] about using standardized spelling or
keeipong to the sound of yer ain dialeckt...
They just published the last of the Scots Na'l dictionary--that they started
in like 1924 or something.
Youknow, it's too bad allthis stuff wasn't available 25 years ago--we
could've learned this stuff then...what am I thinking...I had a life then...
I am up to G in the dicitonary you found me. God I love how they traced it
all to Gaelic. The reason why nobody does is that everybody knows German and
Latin and Greek and nobody....NOBODY....learns Gaelic. I tell you it opens a
lot of doors in philology--especially that far north.
I'm also mindblown of the extent of the
Scots vocabulary. They have 4 or 5 words to evey english word...the range is
simply astounding. The Scot's Quire you found me [and I sent away for one
of his earlier books and got it] uses a wider range of Scots than any other
author I have ever seen.
Wait....what if this IS my life?
