Ik heb een woordenboek van Arthur Thibert met groot (38 p.) opschrift
'Eskimo-English Dictionary', met als kleine (12 p.) ondertitel
'Inuktitut-English', van het Centre Canadien de Recherches en Anthropologie,
Université Saint Paul, Ottawa. Een herdruk uit 1997. Dus met dat 'out' valt
het misschien wel mee.

Wat 'Amerindian' betreft:
Amerindian komt tegenwoordig als voornaam voor, om de liefde voor en
geworteldheid in het continent en de oorspronkelijke bevolking aan te geven.
De naam is als volgt geregistreerd:
English, m: ]Amerind, ]Amerindian, f: ]Amerindia, ]Amerindiana.
Spanish/Portuguese, m: ]Ameríndio, f: ]Ameríndia.
Dat een dergelijke term op een dag een voornaam wordt, dus van iets wat min
of meer opgedrongen of negatief is, in een geliefde naam verandert, is een
heel gewone ontwikkeling: Gypsy, Gitano, Naffer e.d. zijn ook al
geregistreerd als voornamen, en heel oude 'slechte' etiketten zijn zo
ingeburgerd dat niemand meer weet dat ze ooit buitengewoon denigrerende
beschrijvingen waren: Barabara, Dougal, Wallace.

In principle, this is quite easy: a gentleman/a lady; Mr. Weiss/Ms. Weiss;
Rick/Rita or whatever the name may be.
It's an excellent opportunity to do away with ethnic labeling!! :-)

In situations where it really matters, I should say "a member of the
Sinti/Roma". At least in English, that is also an excellent opportunity to
do away with gender labeling!! :-))

In Saskatchewan, Canada the people who lived here for thousands of years
before Europeans came to settle have been called Indians, First Nations
People, Native and aborigine. When I ask individuals of that group which
term they prefer, they have tell me there is no consensus. Some prefer one
term and others prefer a different term, most being indifferent about it.
