Kan dalk geen verband houden met dadelijk?
Is  nie - nie geen gevolg van de vele Franse Hugenoten die naar Zuid
Afrika zijn gegaan?
Ik denk hierbij aan het Franse ne .. pas.
Alles is maar eigen fantasie, dus heb niet direct geantwoord.

Perhaps from Dutch "dadelijk", meaning: (quite) soon, in a moment,
originally: right now, effectively.
Colloquial Dutch pronunciation is "dalijk" [da:l at k] or even [da:k].
Dutch Dadelijk derives from "daad", which is cognate with English
deed and German Tat.

Ek glo ook, dat die woord "dalk" verband hou met Nederlands _dadelijk_ (Van
Dale:  1)aanstonds werkend of plaatshebbend => direct, 2) werkelijk,
feitelijk, 3)  na zeer korte tijd => direct, terstond, gelijk, meteen,
onmiddellijk) [ werklik, rektig, regtig; binnekort, nou-nou, netnou].

Dis waarskynlik 'n saak van 'n (eienaardige) semantiese verschuiving.

In Nedersasksies (Nederduits, Platduits) sê ons _dallig_ ~ _dalli_ voor
"nou-nou" of "gou-gou", wat dalk ook van *_dadelig_ afkom (< _daad_).  In
Missingsch (Duits op Nedersaksies substraat) benut ons ook _dalli_.  Die sin
_Nu ma(al) dalli!_ 'Nou-nou, gou-gou!' word in Nedersaksies en in Duits
gebruik.

Like our friends above, I believe that Afrikaans _dalk_ 'maybe' is related
to (i.e., a contracted derivative of) Dutch _dadelijk_ 'really',
'immediately' (< _daad_ 'deed'), only underwent a peculiar semantic shift
("really" > "probably").

In Lowlands Saxon (Low German) we use _dallig_ or _dalli_ 'immediately',
'right away', which entered Missingsch (German on Lowlands Saxon substrate).
The sentence _Nu ma(al) dalli!_ 'Hurry up now!' is identical in Lowlands
Saxon and Missingsch.
