Subject: Language policy

Dear Lowlanders,

I just read this in our local newspaper:
The village of 'Brouckerque' in France has decided to 'reflemish' all
the streetnames. The French names will be in small letters under the
Flemish name. This event is supported by the Belgian province of
West-Vlaanderen and the Eu.VO (Europa der Volken). The maire
Jean-Pierre Decool wants all the public buildings to be named in
Flemish.
Some years ago, there was a similar initiative with all the names on
the farms in French-Flanders. They were marked with a yellow sign. On
it was the historical Flemish name of the building or the hamlet. The
difference now is that it is an official action, from the maire of
the village. The same is happening (or is about to happen) in other
villages like Rubrouck, Lederzele, Warhem, Killem...
Some examples:
First the Fench name and then the Flemish (not Dutch!) name:
Rue des Joncs - Biezenstraete
Rue des Iris - Lisbloemstraete
Chemin de Vliet - Vlietweg (with its new translation: Chemin de la
petite rivière)
Public buildings:
mairie - wethuys
église Saint-Omer - Sint-Omaarskerke
presbytère - pastorie
