Beste Michael,
The fact that your ancestor was called "the Spaniard" could indeed well
refer to the
fact that he was born in the Spanish Netherlands, but it could also mean
that he
looked like a Spaniard.
There is for example this very common surname in Flanders "De Moor"
(attributed as
early as 1216 A.D.), which was usually given to people with swarthy looks
(strong
beard growth, in the case of men...beetle brows...dark eyes...black curly
hair),
because they reminded them of the Moors, the inhabitans of Mauretania. More
specifically, Spanish islamic people were also labelled "Mooren". And a
water kettle
is still called "ne moeër" up till this day (because they often look
blackish, due to
soot). Moreover, people in the North still have this delicacy called
"moorkoppen".
Yummy!
Let's just say that Spanish oppression left a visible imprint on human
physiology in
certain parts of Flanders and Brabant. More so in cities than in the
countryside in my
opinion. In many a case I think I can even distinguish between faces that
can be
traced back to Roman genes and Spanish influence. But not always of course
*s*.
Kind greetings,
Luc Hellinckx
