Dear Sandy Fleming, John Duckworth and other Lowlanders,
Thank you so much for the the background info on the Edward ballad. It's
just what I was looking for.
I still don't know why "Geier," but I assume that it's like the confusion in
Puerto Rican Spanish between "aura" (vulture) and "guaraguao" (hawk.)
I just notice the French version has "vautour" instead of "faucon":
Edouard
"Quel est ce sang sur ton épée,
Edouard, et pourquoi sembles-tu si triste?"
Oh! "J'ai abattu mon vautour,
Ma mère, voilà ce qui me tourmente."
Oh!
Oh! "Et que vas-tu faire de toi,
Edouard, mon fils, dis-le moi?"
Oh! "Il me faut quitter ce sol,
Ma mère, et partir sillonner l'océan!"
Oh! "Et que va devenir ta demeure,
Edouard, si belle, si somptueuse?"
Oh!
Oh!
