When I grew up in Teglingen in the Emsland, Vesper was the meal in
between lunch and dinner at about 4pm (just before you started feeding
the cattle). Typically. the it was a meal with sandwiches and thee. And
the activity of eating the Vesper, was called 'vespern'. Especially in
LS dialect.

Thanks for reminding me, Ansgar.  (It was I whom you quoted above, by the
way.)

Indeed, I have heard South Germans use _Vesper_ in the sense of '(meal)
break' also.  I've never used it myself in that sense, but I just checked a
couple of Lowlands Saxon (Low German) dictionaries, and one of the German
glosses they give is _Imbiss_ 'snack'.

This reminds me that it's about time for me to do some serious vespering
myself.
