Dear Ron & others,

I was fascinated with the word 'Sinterklaas' - I'm no
linguistic but this sounds very similar to the
Northumbrian word 'Santeeclaas'. I'd be interested in
hearing more about the evolution of Sinterklaas & how
come it so similar to Northumbrian.

Gan canny,
Regards,

Glenn Simpson

Thanks, Glenn. So who exactly is this Northumbrian 'Santeeclaas', and what
sort of traditions are connected with him? Interestingly, I cannot find any
trace of him on the Web.

Is there a link between him and the Continental Lowlands equivalent? I
expect there is, possibly due to "Flemish" merchants and artisans having
migrated to parts of Scotland and Northern England a long time ago.

If this pans out, I'm sure the members of your society would be interested
in it.

Trusting that folks in and from the Lowlands are having a good St. Nick's
Day,

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
