Well, this is what my etymological dictionary says:

smeu (1897), smeuïg (1778) [...], with secondary, rounded -eu < smeeïg <
smedig, compare Nfri. smeudich, smedich. Related to smeden/smid (smith)
[...]. A groundform *smuði is unacceptable. However, it could be from
Germanic *smanþô and *smanþi- (related to English "smooth").
As Low Saxon equivalents it mentions "smô" < "smôde" and "smöde".

As someone else mentioned, "ouwel" seems to be related to Latin
"oblāta", perhaps not directly derived from it, but as a cross-over
between two unknown words.
