The connection with 'orig' sounds more likely than the one with 'ornery',
going by the meaning, anyway. CSD (Concise Scots Dictionary) doesn't connect
it with 'ordinary' (Scots 'ordinar(y)') suggesting that it may be a
reduction of 'ower aa', ie, emphasising the 'spare' or 'over' meaning. I
suppose the phrases 'orra standart' and 'orra framewark' must come from it
being interpreted as 'ordinary', but I see no evidence that this is an
actual usage in CSD, nor have I ever heard it used in this way.
