Subject: Orthography
Sandy,
This is an excellent piece. It explains my own
position perfectly, much better than I ever have!
It is a completely correct and crucial point that
English itself lacks a 'standard' as such.
Orthographic conventions vary from publication to
publication, writer to writer, and even basic
spellings offer alternatives (British English has
_realize/civilize_ vs _realise/civilise_, _judgement_
vs _judgment_, and _queueing_ vs _queuing_, for
example, and that's before you get to any issues of
capital letters, punctuation, usage etc).
The same is bound to apply to Scots. I can't see any
kind of 'Academie Ecossaise' ever being formed!
Therefore it is a question of the parameters within
which a text can be considered authentically Scots,
rather than judgement against an enforced standard.
Best wishes,
=====
