Ik denk dan dat de Achterhoekse dialecten ook bij de Westfaalse groep horen,
aangezien ze ten zuiden van Twente en Drenthe worden gesproken... Ik meen
trouwens ook altijd begrepen te hebben dat het Drenths dichter bij het
Gronings
staat dan bij de Overijsselse dialecten (Twente, Salland), en dat enkel
Drenths
(samen met Stellingwerfs) en Gronings toebehoren aan de Noordsaksische
groep.

PS: bestaat er een voorkeur voor de spelling 'Grunnen' of 'Grönnen' als
plaatselijke naam voor de provincie Groningen?

Indeed, although Elsie intervened to split us up, so to speak - and I
suspect it didn't help that one of my rants was double-posted, making me
appear deaf to reason.

We'll have to agree to disagree (as we so often end up doing). The minutae
of language convention may not be a very inclusive subject, but it is
fascinating one - at least to us!

I would write "analyse". I always view the /z/ option as a harsh-looking
Americanism. Nevertheless, as you point out, '-ize' is strictly more
etymologically accurate.

Interestingly enough, there was a short debate about this in The Australian
newspaper recently, which has taken to writing "pedophile" for "paedophile"
in the last year largely because the Australian pronunciation is
increasingly [ped] rather than [pi:d]. (And I suspect the editor wanted to
how much influence the paper has on writing conventions in Australia.)

An indignant reader argued that /paed/ is closer to the original Greek vowel
and that if "paedophile" was changed, so too should "paediatric". Another
reader countered that following that contention would necessitate the
re-spelling of hundreds of words, such as "anaemia" and "haemophilia". The
debate ended in a no-score draw.
