Thare - that's the first differ atween Scots an Gaelic in Scotland. When ye
lairn Gaelic, ye lairn hou ti write it, but the'r nae ettle I ken o ti lairn
naebodie hou ti write Scots, forby aff the tap o thair heid. Tho the'r mair
nor juist spellin involved here, tae - 'skelpit' in braid Scots haes twa
syllables - 'skel-pit', an 'schuil' is no pronunced wi a 'oo' soond, but
aither like 'skill' or 'skweel', or wi a vowel like in French 'rue' or
'feu', or a bittie like Gaelic 'ao'. That's the ither differ - in Gaelic,
fowk spells mair or less a certain wey even tho thair speak micht be
different (compare Skye an Lewis pronunciations o the first vowel in
'Ciamar', for example) whaurbyes in Scots we'r telt ti juist write the wey
we speak, an thaim at writes beuks for bairns pits thaim oot in differin
dialects. In ither words, Scots is representit as sub-leeterate.
