I have several nieces and nephews in the Hannover area who are in their
early twenties; none of them speaks much Platt (although one is fluent in
Dutch), but they all understand a lot, if not most of it.

When I lived on a farm in Oregon, my niece from Hannover, then 16/17, stayed
with us for a year and attended the local rural highschool as a senior. That
certainly meant a great clash of cultures - a sophisticated, liberal
feminist punk-rocker and environmental activist from a big Northern German
city in a community of mostly pious Baptists, Mennonites and Country/Western
fans! Oh dear. She accidentally dropped something in the schoolyard once and
exclaimed, "Shit!" - there was an eerie silence - and then a girl asked very
cautiously: "You mean... the BAD word?" A teacher heard her, too, and was
going to get her into trouble, but she claimed she had said "Schiet" in
Lower Saxon and that it merely means "mud", and got away with it.

Something tells me a place like Portland or Seattle would have suited her a
lot better...
